The 50 Year Old Rare Tawny is a symbol of Penfolds heritage, typifying collaboration and shared creative expression. Amongst the many individual components captured in this wine is the 1915 vintage, reported to be the foundation of the first Grandfather cask. Additionally, the 1940, 1945 vintages, the first two commercial releases of the Grandfather (in 1965 and 1969 respectively) and the first Great Grandfather release (1994). Incorporating the 1915 vintage component from Penfolds precious glass stock reserves means the Penfold 50 Year Old Rare Tawny carries a generic connection to the earliest recorded vintage of Penfolds Grandfather Tawny. TASTING NOTES Vibrant and fresh, intensely complex with vanillin, burnt toffee, dark chocolate and Christmas pudding elements all seamlessly integrated. Silky and luscious with concentrated flavours of mocha, chocolate and fruit cake. These flavours evolve and complex into salted plum and savoury spices, lingering on and on in a perfectly balanced finish. OTHER NOTES For the Series one release in 2013, Penfolds collaborated with glass artist Nick Mount to create 330 units, individually blown and hand crafted to suit the rarity of the wine. Respected Australian glass artist Nick Mount was commissioned to create a bottle design worthy of its contents. The uniquely designed and individually crafted bottle was skillfully hand-blown and hand-assembled. The passion and technical skill of blowing glass by hand; the precision of the hand-turned wooden stoppers crafted from history-soaked timbers of old Penfolds fortified barrels; the painstaking hours of positioning and attaching each pewter crest and hand-twisting every muselet wire: these time-honoured artisanal skills have created a beautifully tailored receptacle for this long-awaited Tawny.
